Xavi Hernandez and the sporting sector of FC Barcelona believe that the squad could use a distinct and unique kind of addition apart from the priorities established earlier by the Blaugrana coaches.
As of right now, while a pivot still remains the absolute priority due to the departure of Sergio Busquets and the consequent vacant position, Xavi believes a new midfielder would be a very welcome addition, despite not being a necessity.
According to the latest report by Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugrana head coach believes the right profile he needs right now is a type of interior or central midfielder who has the awareness and visionary capabilities to establish a strong connection with the frontline and be able to play line-breaking vertical passes, particularly to Barcelona talisman Robert Lewandowski.
As per the report, the player that the club and coach himself particularly like according to this particular playmaking criteria is Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovanni Lo Celso, who was most recently on loan at Spanish side Villarreal CF.
Having impressed in Spain during his time with Real Betis, the Argentine midfielder has since seen his time in England, with Spurs buying him for a fee in the region of €40 million from Betis, not amounting to much and resulting in him being sent on a 2-year loan to Villarreal prior to now finally returning.
Barcelona are contemplating whether a potential move to Barcelona would be feasible for the Argentine and how negotiations may go with Spurs over his transfer fee or potential loan deal.
It also remains to be seen how much of an influence and how exactly the appointment of Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou affect the continuity of the Argentine Lo Celso at the English club, keeping in mind he is still legally contracted to them until 2025.
