FC Barcelona have been home to many talented footballers over the decades, and they are no strangers to possessing some of the greatest captains and leaders to have graced the footballing fields of Europe and beyond.

From the likes of Pep Guardiola to Carles Puyol and even Lionel Messi in recent years, Barcelona have had the privilege to win titles and various honors under prestigious leadership and generational players.

Now, as a new era dawns upon the storied Catalan club, so must new leaders take on the armband and rise to the new occasion that is demanded of this revolutionized Barcelona side full of youngsters and emerging talents.

In a recent report, SPORT has managed to highlight part of Xavi’s media talk where he addressed the current situation of the captaincies within Barcelona following the departures of three out of the four current captains.

As Sergio Busquets (first captain), Gerard Pique (second captain) and even Jordi Alba (fourth captain) have all departed Barcelona either due to retirement or to pursue new chapters in their careers, Barcelona are now left with only Sergi Roberto, who became the new first captain following the three departures and Marc Andre Ter Stegen, who became the newest addition to the list.

With two places now empty indefinitely, Barcelona will look to elect new captains. When asked about the procedure of appointing the new captains, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez said that they would be selected on the basis of ‘democracy’, stating:

“…They are very important losses. They were two leaders in the locker room. Sergi Roberto stays, Ter Stegen… let’s see the captains. We need to assume new roles. There will be voting for the captains. Total democracy. They need to feel comfortable…”

Now the Camp Nou faithful who are eager to find out about the new selected captains will have to wait until the team returns for pre-season and then elects the players who will become part of the four leaders who don the Barcelona armband.
