Despite their obvious problems both on and off the field, Barcelona continue to strive for excellence. Their well-documented financial troubles are there for the world to see, but La Blaugrana still manage to ensure quality recruitment remains consistent.
Over the previous summer, one of the main points of concern was the pivot position. Due to the departure of Sergio Busquets, Barcelona needed an adequate replacement. However, the amount of funds they could allocate to such an operation were quite limited.
Xavi still trusts Romeu
Ultimately, it would be Oriol Romeu that Barcelona would place their trust in. Bringing the former Girona man in for close to €3 million, Barcelona managed to recruit a La Masia talent. His start to life in Barcelona was great, moreover, as he started in 7 of the 8 opening games.
However, he has since lost prominence within the team. With only 4 starts in the last 8 games, there has been a clear change of tides. Yet, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, Xavi remains delighted with the contributions of the 32-year-old.
Romeu has adapted well to Xavi’s style
Despite not starting games as prominently as before, he remains a great influence. He continues to serve as a loyal servant to the club and does not seem irritated when he does not get many starts. He understands his position well within Barcelona and continues to be there whenever he is needed.
Moreover, he reportedly plays quite accurately as per Xavi’s tactics. While he may have been underwhelming at times this season, he has also had great performances. In particular, Romeu has shined whenever he has played alongside Frenkie De Jong.
However, due to the Dutchman currently being sidelined, Romeu has taken a hit as well. Ultimately, he still remains a key part of this Barcelona side and MD states that Xavi considers him to have been the right recruit for Barcelona given their limited resources.
