Xavi is reaching an important milestone in his career as a manager as he is about to reach the first centenary of his games in the FC Barcelona dugout.
The legendary midfielder for the Catalan club was appointed as its manager in November 2021, taking over at the club after Ronald Koeman was sacked because of poor performances. Despite his improving performances since his appointment as the head coach, opinion is still divided on whether Xavi is actually the right person for this job.
During his time at the club, Xavi has guided Barcelona through memorable victories and painful defeats. Mundo Deportivo has revisited his time in the Barcelona dugout by asking Xavi ten questions which are reiterated below:
Best Match
“The victory in the Supercup against Madrid. It was our first title, against Madrid, and the game that day perfectly reflected the idea we aim for.”
Most special victory
“The derby against Espanyol last year, the day we won the league. We clinched the title at our city rivals’ home, and it was also one of our best matches.”
Hardest defeat
“The 0-3 loss at home against Bayern last season, which marked the definitive farewell from the Champions League.”
Most complicated rival
“Real Madrid is always very difficult. And Bayern Munich as well.”
Most difficult player to stop
“Rashford was really tough for us. Also Vinicius, Benzema…”
Tactic or tweak that worked best
“We introduced several variations, and most of them worked, especially the change last year when we played with a false winger in midfield. Although the system was the same.”
The best rival approach
“Inter and their 5-3-2 formation executed it almost perfectly.”
Own player who has surprised you the most
“It would be unfair to highlight just one. I’m impressed by the combination of the experienced players and the mentality of the young ones. But what surprised me the most is the human quality of all the players I’ve had.”
Stadium or rival that you liked the most
“Atletico, Betis, Sevilla… These are venues with a fantastic atmosphere.”
Best referee
“De Burgos Bengoetxea.”
Xavi has provided some interesting answers to these questions regarding his time at the club. Naturally, his best match and most memorable victory both came at the eves of Barcelona winning a trophy.
Now, having conquered Spain, Xavi will be looking to try his mettle once again on the biggest European stage and will be facing Porto in his next match. This tie will also mark his 100th game with Barcelona, further growing Xavi’s already indomitable status at the Catalan club.
