FC Barcelona is a club that has been home to some of the greatest names in the history of football. However, the legacy and history of a player or character can often be misrepresented later on in their lives. In a lot of such cases, said players often jeopardize their legacies when they take on management roles at Barcelona.
Previously, a great example of this was Ronald Koeman’s tenure as Barcelona’s head coach. Once a revered hero of the club, having won them their first-ever European Cup back in 1992, he was heavily criticized by a lot of the fans while he coached the club.
This undoubtedly tarnished his legacy in front of a lot of people. However, he still came into the club at a point where they were struggling. Similarly, Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez also took that very same risk when he arrived from Qatar.
However, now that everyone seems to be after his head, certain possibilities can not be overlooked. While Xavi believes he can still turn this season around, he understands that a parting of ways with the club may be inevitable if he ends the season with no silverware.
Despite this daunting possibility for Xavi, AS reports that he will always put the club first. Acknowledging their financial difficulties, the Barcelona coach would be willing to forego all his financial compensation. This comes as a result of him understanding that the club’s current financial position is not exactly healthy.
Simply put, if this report is indeed true, this showcases a lot about Xavi as a character. Irrespective of his tactical input or sporting shortcomings, he is a Barcelona man through and through. Raised and developed through the youth academy, he was among the pioneers of the club’s golden generation.
However, the coach continues to have faith in himself and his players. He realizes that he has at least led the club to a better progression than it had when he originally took over. On the other hand, the recent defeat to Real Madrid truly has taken its toll.
For now, according to AS at least, Barcelona simply waiting for the Champions League tie. At the moment, no abrupt decision is expected to be taken. However, if Barça do end up faltering against Napoli, a lot of changes could potentially be accelerated.
