One of the key items on FC Barcelona agenda in the coming weeks is the renewal of Xavi Hernandez. The club has already officially announced the renewal of Alejandro Balde, and the head coach will now be given an extension on his contract.
Ever since his appointment on the Barcelona bench, Xavi has done a good job of steadying the ship at the club. He took over at a turbulent time from Ronald Koeman and has gradually brought in stability in the squad, also helping the club win the league title last season.
A special clause in Xavi’s contract
The renewal between Xavi and the club is almost in its last stages and can be finalized in the coming hours. Both parties have arrived at an agreement in the last few days, and only a final signature now remains to complete the extension.
After this renewal, Xavi’s contract will go on till June 2025. Earlier, the club was planning for a contract till 2026, but Xavi will currently extend for only one season.
However, SPORT reports that it will not be difficult to further extend his contract by another year if he is successful in 2024, as there is a specific clause in this contract to deal with such an eventuality.
Xavi to get another opportunity for extension
The report claims that under this clause, Xavi’s contract will be extended automatically till 2026 if Barcelona wins La Liga or Uefa Champions League in the time till his contract expires.
Even if Xavi does not win any of these trophies this season, he will still have an opportunity to extend his stay at the club if he is able to win any of these titles in the upcoming year. For now, in his around two years at the club, Xavi has been able to win a Spanish Super Cup and a La Liga title.
