Xavi’s reaction after the 2-0 defeat against Bayern

Xavi spoke about the mistakes, missed chances, being the better side, positives from the game, Lewandowski’s performance, and being happy with his team’s overall performance in his post-match press conference.

Xavi’s reaction after the 2-0 defeat against Bayern

Xavi on the result of the match:

“I am disappointed, it’s a painful result. I think most of the time, we played better than them. We won individual duels and created many chances and it is surprising that we did not score, this is football, happy with the level of the team, but the result is painful.”

“The result is not a reflection of the entire match. But this is the Champions League. If you miss chances, you will end up paying that. We messed up. This defeat is a step backward.”

Xavi on the potential Penalty:

“I didn’t see the foul on Dembélé yet, but everyone says it should have been a penalty. In general, we lost through our own mistakes. You know, I won’t talk about the referees.”

Xavi on the difference between the two sides:

“The difference between us and Bayern is that they don’t forgive in front of goal. We lost a lot of chances, 6/7 chances of them were very clear. When you don’t convert your chances, you pay the price.”

“For the majority of the match, we were better than Bayern. And that is so disappointing. The lack of effectiveness killed us.”

Xavi on the goals conceded:

“Our marking in the corner was very bad, and we should have fouled the runner in the play for the second goal. They stop the game and we don’t. That is what competing means.”

“You can’t be controlling a match then conceding from a corner kick. Or conceding a chance from the middle like the play for the 2-0. We have to learn from our mistakes.”

Xavi on being competitive:

“Competing means winning corners, closing transitions, or having a chance in front of the goalkeeper and scoring it.”

“When you lose in the Champions League you pay the price, we were better than Bayern but they don’t lose, that’s the difference.”

Xavi on the positives of the match:

“We have to keep the positive things from today’s match – the result is negative but we have to learn from our mistakes. In the first half, we were excellent with the ball, but I’m angry because we wanted to win here today.”

“We have done enough – not only to draw but to win. We have to learn from our mistakes and keep working.”

Xavi on the missed chances:

“Lewandowski did not score today, Pedri also got two chances, and Raphinha took a shot from outside the area. Today was the day to score goals but we lost 2-0. You can say they are a team that’s ready and we are still in the beginning phase.”

“We must learn from our mistakes and we have to improve starting from the next match against Elche.”

That concluded Xavi’s press conference.
