FC Barcelona needed a win against Granada, but they could not come up with anything better than a draw. Despite seeming comfortable initially, it seemed that the Catalans began to slip as time kept passing. Ultimately, Barcelona ended the game with a 3-3 draw against a side they were expected to win against.
While most of the defensive performances were frustrating, there were moments of magic from certain players. A certain 16-year-old forward, for instance, exploded onto the stage and continued to provide wondrous moments.
Here is how the Barcelona players fared.
Player Ratings:
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen: 6.5
Not exactly the big glowing comeback that the German international would have wanted, but still a much more competent display than Barcelona has gotten accustomed to with their goalkeeper. His composure on the ball helped launch a decent number of attacks as well.
Joao Cancelo: 7.0
The Portuguese fullback had a rather quiet game by his standards. While he tried to be influential in attack and provide width while defending and in possession, Cancelo’s performance was not at his usual sparkling best. However, he did provide a brilliant assist to Lamine Yamal.
Pau Cubarsi: 6.5
Despite his tender age, Pau Cubarsi remains a great example of meritocracy at its finest. His quality surely outweighs his lack of experience, and it showcases itself perfectly whenever he has the ball.
Some lethal passes in between the lines provided Barcelona with some great moments of joy. However, the lack of experience did show in his marking of certain Granada forwards.
Inigo Martinez: 6.5
The Spaniard was back in action for Barcelona and showed exactly why. However, while his passing and mentality were as lethal as ever, his defensive awareness did seem questionable at times. Allowed Granada way too much space to exploit at certain points as well.
Jules Kounde: 7.5
In terms of forward play, the French defender was perhaps Barcelona’s most progressive defender. His link-up with Lamine Yamal was a joy to watch at times, but he was also just as aware of his defensive duties whenever he had to track back.
Andreas Christensen: 6.5
His key interventions in the midfield allowed Barcelona to make some key progressions. Despite his technical difficulties, the Dane showcases exactly how effective Barcelona can be when a set pivot is in place to coordinate the midfield.
Ilkay Gundogan: 7.5
Yet again, the German midfielder provides Barcelona with hope whenever it seems completely lost. While the entirety of his game was a solid display, nothing showcases his class better than the genius assist he provided to Robert Lewandowski.
Frenkie De Jong: 6.5
Unlike his partners in midfield, Frenkie De Jong seemed aimless at times during the game. The Dutchman was unable to play his usual style of football, and at times his passes seemed much more reserved than his typical distribution.
Pedri: 7.0
While he may not get on the scoresheet often, nor does he get the applause for many assists, Pedri gives Barcelona composure and balance. His passing, composure, and ability to release and receive, are all together a brilliant mix of techniques that make him such a joy to watch.
Robert Lewandowski: 7.5
An improved performance from the Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski was lethal enough in this game. Despite missing a chance that he ideally should have scored, he converted one that seemed far more unlikely. Solid display from him.
Lamine Yamal: 9.0
An unreal display of quality and supernatural talent was put on by young Lamine Yamal. His first goal showcased his keen eye for goals and his positioning, but his second showcased a superstar in the making. Wondrous performance from the jewel of La Masia, and he is surely going to give Barcelona much more in the years to come.
Substitutes:
Fermin Lopez: 6.0
A dynamic entrance into the field, Fermin Lopez provided a lot of energy. However, not all of it seemed to be benefiting the Catalan giants at times.
Raphinha: N/A
Not enough time or influence on the game to warrant a rating.
Marc Guiu: N/A
Not enough time or influence on the game to warrant a rating.
