Barcelona have started off 2024 in a strong manner when it comes to getting results. The Catalan giants have managed to overcome both their opening tests, one in La Liga and the other in the Copa Del Ray. However, Barcelona have barely managed to push past their opponents.
Much of the blame for these irregular performances has gone towards the players. One star in particular who does not seem to be having the best of times right now is Joao Felix. Currently on loan from Atletico Madrid, the Portuguese star is beginning to show signs of slowing down.
In fact, his progression has deteriorated to the point where he is no longer a guarantee in the starting eleven. Consequently, according to SPORT, Felix could even lose his spot against Osasuna as a result. The upcoming battle for Barcelona will be against them in the Spanish Super Cup, and it is a great chance at winning a title.
With the first official piece of silverware at stake, Xavi will not want to take chances. As such, the Spanish coach could choose to start with Joao Felix on the bench. Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha seem to be set as starters within the eyes of Xavi, and as it stands, Ferran Torres possibly ranks higher than Felix as well when it comes to left wing.
Thus far this season, Felix has managed to score 6 goals and provide 3 assists. However, across his 22 appearances, irregularity has become quite the norm. In certain games, such as the ones against Atletico Madrid and Porto, Felix has undeniably shined. However, it seems as if whenever he is not motivated enough, the player loses his spark.
Even in the most recent outing against Barbastro, Felix continuously put Barça in very awkward positions. Continuous turnovers led to the opponents constantly thwarting the Barça goal way more than they should have been able to.
At the rate this is going, Felix’s continuity beyond this season remains doubtful. Moreover, given the absurd amounts of money Atletico Madrid wish to receive for his transfer, Barcelona would think twice before allocating that sum towards an underperforming star.
