Barcelona must improve in this new year as they still have half a season left to make something of it. However, the same old ways and techniques of the past can no longer be trusted to help them get better. Thus, Xavi’s Barcelona will likely need to see a transformation in 2024.

One such transformation could be for players to earn their place in the team based on merit. No more favorites or guaranteed starters, and those that do not perform up to the level that is expected, should be replaced by those hungrier to do so.

One such case is undoubtedly that of Joao Felix. As per a previous report, he will likely be benched in the game against Las Palmas today. However, as per the latest update from SPORT, he could simultaneously also have this game as his final opportunity to prove himself. On the other hand, it could also mark the start of his decline in the hierarchy.

Thus far, Joao Felix has showcased both his best versions as well as his average mediocrity. Consistency is arguably the biggest concern when it comes to the Portuguese forward on loan from Atletico Madrid. Barcelona need to now perform with a constant quality, and inconsistencies can no longer be tolerated.

In terms of minutes, Felix has only not started in three games since he has arrived at Barcelona. He played as a substitute against both Shakhtar Donetsk and Rayo Vallecano, and was rested against Royal Antwerp once qualification to the knockout stages was already confirmed.

In total, he has 1307 minutes across all competitions and 20 appearances. While his inclusion has more or less been constant, his displays have not. Undoubtedly, the 24-year-old forward has talent, and he has showcased it. The only issue is, he does it sparingly.

Against Atletico Madrid for instance, Felix played a match that left many perplexed. Every decision he made, every attempt he tried, and even the goal that he scored, were nothing short of an elite level. However, there are also cases like his performances against Real Madrid and Girona, where he is nowhere to be found.

Now, with the arrival of Vitor Roque as well, Felix will need to step up. As it stands, there is not much confidence behind his name at the moment. However, he has the quality and ability to play at a much higher level, and he just needs to become consistent with it.
