Alas, a triumph returns to Catalonia after a drought of 18 months, and against eternal rivals Real Madrid no less. Scintillating, immense, and enjoyable football, Barcelona tonight truly encompassed both their own identity and that of what it means to be Spanish Super Cup champions, simultaneously.
A first half where although possession was shared to an extent, it was all in Barcelona’s control throughout. With this win, FC Barcelona are this season’s Spanish Super Cup Champions, overcoming their fiercest rivals on foreign soil, and as always has been the case, an El Clasico win can do wonders for a team’s mentality and progression in the season. Riding high after this first taste of silverware, this young and hungry Barcelona side will be keen on continuing this great run of form and quality in displays far into the season as they compete for the remaining titles that they are eligible for.
The remaining objectives are now as follows: La Liga Santander where they currently sit atop the table, the UEFA Europa League where they next face an insurgent Manchester United, and the Copa Del Ray where they next face AD Ceuta in the Round of 16 on Thursday, the 19th of January.
With this massive win now sealed, there is no reason why the Catalans would aspire for anything less than a strong continuation of this promising season.
