FC Barcelona have a wide array of talents at the club’s disposal this season. Many of the stars in question are seen as players that can be difference-makers, but some stand out even more than others. However, the continuity of these players is also a pressing matter.

During the ongoing 2023/24 season, Barcelona have had to rely on loan arrivals and low-cost signings. Their financial limitations have understandably taken their toll, but Barcelona have managed to live with them thus far.

However, to ensure their sporting success, Barcelona are certain that specific players must be retained permanently. One such player is Portuguese star Joao Cancelo, whose recent performance against Porto was absolutely sensational.

With a great goal to tie the score and then an assist to win it for Barcelona, Cancelo was the best player on the pitch for many. However, his stay with the club remains in effect only until the summer of 2024. On loan from Manchester City, Cancelo and Barça want to make their partnership last much longer.

According to SPORT, Barcelona are clear that the Portuguese fullback must continue in Blaugrana colors. However, given Cancelo’s great performances, it is believed that Manchester City will likely ask for a high fee for him.

As such, the Catalans are hoping to negotiate more favorable terms for themselves. In order to do that, as per SPORT, they leave much of the details and planning to the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes. Given Cancelo’s intention to stay, Barcelona have a strong case working in their favor.

Moreover, Cancelo’s relationship with Pep Guardiola is also seen as being shaky. This could prompt Manchester City to let him go in a more eager fashion. Barcelona hopes to extend his loan by an additional year and add an obligatory purchase option at the end of it, and City could potentially agree to it.

Their recent transfer history and goodwill also act as a favorable bonus. As things stand, SPORT believes that the two clubs are likely to come to an understanding. The most probable final result seems to be heading towards an extension of the loan itself.

However, with Cancelo’s current valuation being €50 million, City are also aware of the financial asset that he is. Other clubs will undoubtedly want a go, and City could choose to have open ears. For this exact reason, Barcelona want to begin work on this operation sooner rather than later.
