Gone are the days of Barcelona possessing primarily just veterans in their team. This modern iteration of the Catalan club, instead, relies a lot more on the younger blood to carry its legacy. However, sprinkled here and there, some of the old guards of Barcelona still remain at the club.
One of those veteran representatives is Sergi Roberto. Now aged 31, the Barcelona captain has been at the club since the very beginning. He has been part of some of the club’s biggest triumphs, and has also been there for some of the worst humiliations.
Now, however, he hopes to continue delivering for the club and his objective is to start with the Spanish Super Cup. As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the Spaniard was asked about his contract situation as well given that it expires in the summer:
“Last year I was in the same situation. I hope that next season I can be here, about to play in a final and as the first captain of the team. I hope that tomorrow we can leave here with a title and be able to lift the cup.”
Given that Xavi himself has recommended his captain’s renewal, the topic was brought up in front of Roberto as well. To this, he replied positively:
“I have always said that Xavi has been my idol since I was a child. I had him as a teammate later on, and he helped me a lot. Now, I am fortunate to have him as my coach.”
He further dedicated himself to both the coach and FC Barcelona as his club:
“He recommends my renewal. I will always be here for this club, for whatever it needs. If the coach wants me to stay, the club wants me to stay, and I am happy with my role within the team, I am sure there will be no problem. Hopefully, next season, we can be here talking about this match.”
While his dedication to the team seems absolute, a lot will be at stake tomorrow against Real Madrid. With the possibility of Xavi going to a 4-man midfield, Roberto could be an addition to it. Having started the game against Osasuna and maintaining a consistent run of form, Xavi could decide to start his captain once again.
