Barcelona considering an exit for defender after only one season

As the current season reaches its conclusion and the planning begins for the next season ahead, the problem of FFP restrictions is once again going to rear its head at FC Barcelona.

The Catalans were unable to make the required improvements in their finances to return to the 1:1 rule which would have allowed them to spend as many funds as they generated.

Thus, in addition to facing problems when bringing in more players, the Blaugranes will also have to say goodbye to some of their existing players.

According to RAC1, one of the players who can feel the impacts of this situation most significantly is the defender Inigo Martinez. The Spaniard still has one year left on his Barcelona contract, but his future at the club is not guaranteed, and he could very well leave the club this summer.

One factor that makes it even more likely for him to leave is that he has to be registered with La Liga once again this summer, just like a new signing. This is because while he was signed with a two-year contract last summer, he was registered for only one year because Barcelona did not have any more space in their wage bill.

This summer, the situation is going to be even more dire for Barcelona. The most recent data available on salary cap shows that the Catalans have only €204 million to spend on salaries, while they paid an expected amount of €492 million this season.

To make things even worse, Barcelona have their budget lowered by €37 million, and the club can lose a further €15 million if the team is unable to qualify for the Champions League quarterfinals.

Furthermore, Barcelona also have a high number of central defenders available, with the total number of players in this position going up to six if the loanees Eric Garcia and Clement Lenglet are counted.

Ronald Araujo’s future can significantly impact the fate of other center-backs in the club, while Jules Kounde is also a good target for a sale as he has not been up to the required standard this season, but has a high value in the market.

On the other hand, one defender that can rest the most assured about his future at Barcelona is Pau Cubarsi, who does not intend to listen to any offers and has a contract till 2026, which will be further extended when he reaches 18 years of age.
