Without much financial backing, FC Barcelona are rather limited in terms of their summer options. Ideally, the Catalan club would love to reinforce the team with some new elite reinforcements. The reality, however, is far from ideal for Barcelona and it will continue to be a hurdle during this transfer window.
That is why, for better or for worse, the majority of the players Barcelona will have to trust are the ones that are already under contract. This would mean that the club will need to be very careful about which players they choose to let go of and who they end up counting on.
According to SPORT, this spells nothing but good omens for Inigo Martinez. As it currently stands, the report states that both the 33-year-old Spanish defender and FC Barcelona are on the same page, and that page is one that says Inigo Martinez will continue at Barcelona for one more season.
With the player still having one more year on his contract, Barcelona will look to register him again for the upcoming season. Even the player himself is more than motivated to make it count as well, given that he has already started individual training and hopes to be in the best possible shape for the pre-season.
On the other hand, players like Mikayil Faye, Clement Lenglet, and Eric Garcia are the names Barcelona are looking to sell. This would also mean that Martinez would naturally be the only left-footed defender at the disposal of new Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, in turn meaning that he could have more minutes as a consequence.
Moreover, Inigo Martinez has hardly had any luck in terms of offers from other clubs as well. A return to the Athletic Club is completely off the table, and while interest from Saudi Arabia and AC Milan did emerge at certain points, nothing concrete ever came into existence.
For now, Martinez will be hoping to impress Flick just as he impressed his predecessor. Xavi Hernandez managed to count on the veteran Spanish defender, and he will now hope to see the German coach leading Barcelona consider Martinez a key part of his squad as well.
