Barcelona have sent renewal offer to veteran defender, future in player’s hands

The Catalan veteran had previously signed a one-year contract renewal with Barcelona last season on the basis of a significant wage reduction in order to help La Blaugrana’s rather fragile financial situation at the time.

Sergi Roberto, now 30, has reportedly been offered a contract renewal proposal that would see him extend his stay at FC Barcelona by another year at the least. Moreover, the reported terms of the contract also include the option for an additional season should the quota of games played be fulfilled in the season prior.

According to Mundo Deportivo, this new proposal offered to the La Masia product maintains the originally reduced salary offered to the player. There exist other reports from Víctor Navarro that imply that Sergio Roberto has not yet responded to the club’s renewal offer.

Football Espana has gone even further in reporting that the proposal has already been declined by the player due to the exact same concern.

The Spaniard is appreciated by Xavi for his versatility and allegiance to the team’s cause. Despite playing chunks out of matches in terms of minutes, the player has had a good number of appearances thus far in the season. Having played in 18 out of a total of 29 matches for the Blaugrana outfit, the player may yet have a role to play in Xavi’s future plans.
