Possessing a reliable squad with quality depth is key for Barcelona, and that is exactly what they aspire to have. Head coach Xavi Hernandez continues to emphasize the need to secure more options in certain positions at Barcelona.

As previously reported at Barca News Network, there are several positions Xavi hopes to improve. While the right-back, pivot, and interior midfielder positions are vital, the case of the left-back is equally as important.

Lack of Left-backs

Currently, only Alejandro Balde remains the absolute for that position. The 19-year-old is an undisputed starter and his only natural backup is an aged Marcos Alonso. However, the latter’s contract is set to expire in 2024 and unless he renews, he is set to part ways with La Blaugrana.

Consequently, Barcelona are now looking towards certain alternatives. According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Barcelona has already shown interest in bringing back a former player. 23-year-old Juan Miranda remains on the radar for FC Barcelona as a summer arrival.

Free agent in 2024

Set to have his contract with Real Betis expire in the summer of 2024, Miranda would be accessible as a free agent. Reports suggest that contract negotiations are taking place but it seems likely that the player may end up moving away from Betis.

Initially a product of Barcelona, having spent many years in La Masia, the left-back could get a shot at his homecoming. He left for Betis back in 2020 and has been there ever since. Given that he would be a good market opportunity, Barcelona are looking to take advantage.

Resistance from Milan

However, according to Moretto, Barça are not the only one interested. As per the update provided, it appears that Italian giants AC Milan may even be the front runners to get his signature. They have reportedly even begun work to sign him on a pre-agreement in January of 2024.

As a result, Barcelona will have to fend off the interest of another massive European side if they hope to acquire Miranda’s services without a transfer fee in the upcoming summer transfer window.
