The beginning of the preseason is already here for FC Barcelona as things begin to take shape. La Blaugrana have waited quite some time for new coach Hansi Flick to finally get his chance to train the team. However, ahead of their tour to the United States of America, it is important for Barcelona to sort out their squad.

That is why, ahead of the resumption of normal training, the typical medical tests and examinations were done on the players. The likes of Gavi, Oriol Romeu, and other present first team members all took part as they prepare themselves for the upcoming training sessions.

However, despite taking part in the initial medical examinations as well, Frenkie de Jong’s physical progress is not exactly ideal. As highlighted by SPORT, the unsettling recovery progress of the player’s injured ankle was notably visible and it does not fit the medical staff with a lot of hope.

At the moment, it is actually a worrying sight both externally and internally as well. Clearly inflamed from the outside, the Barcelona medical staff is also worried about the external lateral ligament of his right ankle. Injured against Real Madrid, the player has seen an initially slight injury transform into a much bigger problem.

As a consequence of that injury, the player’s participation in the European Championship was also disrupted. Even now, he has not fully recovered from his injury and he needs time to fully get back to his best. However, time is not on the side of Barcelona at the moment, and they must take some drastic measures.

The Catalan club currently has two options for helping out their Dutch star. Firstly, they can try to gradually increase the workload and pressure on the player’s ankle to ensure that it can endure the required workload that the planned recovery process for the player entails.

If that does not work out well, Barcelona will then have to make sure that more surgical intervention becomes a clear option. That surgery could consequently render the player unable to play for the next few months and will likely drastically increase his recovery time.

At the moment, he remains a player that Hansi Flick absolutely wants to see thrive at Barcelona. Unfortunately, the worry that his injury may become a much more difficult ailment to treat is also there. However, only time will tell how the Dutch midfielder progresses in terms of his physical recovery.
