Although Frenkie de Jong currently has a contract till 2026 with FC Barcelona, there is already a lot of uncertainty regarding his future with the Catalan club.

There are still two years left in his contract with Barcelona, but the Catalans offered him a new contract three months ago, which will elongate his association with the club till 2029, but which offered him wages lower than what he is currently earning.

With this contract on the table, De Jong has a decision to make, and Barcelona want him to make his decision as soon as possible. Mundo Deportivo has explained why the Catalans are eager for the Dutchman to make up his mind on the new contract quickly.

Barcelona consider this is the ideal time to renew the 26-year-old Dutch midfielder. If De Jong decides to renew, it will be perfect for the club.

However, if he does not want to renew for any sporting or economic reasons, Barcelona would expect him to bring in an offer in accordance with his age, skills, status, experience, and the years that he still has on his current contract.

The Catalans understand that their bargaining position will be greatly weakened if the player reaches 2025 without extending his contract. With only one year on his contract, other clubs can tempt him to sign up with them as a free agent in 2026.

Similarly, with only one year left on his contract in 2025, Barcelona will not be able to demand as high a fee for him as they can when the player is tied to them for two years.

In addition to his contractual situation, Barcelona are also expecting Frenkie to be more decisive on the pitch, especially in the upcoming Champions League tie against Napoli.

Getting past the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League is now an objective for FC Barcelona, and winning this match will greatly help the Catalans in their pursuit of this goal.
