Some options are a necessity for FC Barcelona, and others are simply affordable luxuries. The necessity of certain signings comes into play when positions of utmost importance are in question. On the other hand, luxuries are essentially top players that can arrive at affordable rates for Barcelona at the moment.

In terms of their priority targets, Barcelona are mainly focused on recruiting a pivot in the summer. Acquiring a top-level defensive midfielder is an objective that Barça have been working on since a long time, but there are other operations that are simultaneously being worked upon in the background.

One such prospect and possible operation is that of Xavi Simons. The former product of La Masia, having played at Barcelona from the age of 7 to 15, currently plays for French club Paris Saint-Germain and has been out on loan for several seasons at various clubs.

Now, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo as well, he has as good a chance as he has ever had to feature for the Barcelona first team. The Catalan club wishes to take him away on loan in the summer, and as per his reported agreement with PSG, the player gets to have a say in which club he would be loaned out to.

As per MD and several other sources, that choice would be Barcelona first and foremost. He wishes to fulfill his dream, and some would have said destiny all those years ago, to feature for the first team at FC Barcelona as it was something almost impossible at the time when he left. Now, however, he has matured greatly as a player and his displays on the European stage have convinced everyone.

However, the only concern now is that Barcelona are still awaiting confirmation regarding Financial Fair play. In the event that Barcelona end up being eligible to act in this transfer window based on the 1:1 rule, something that should not take longer to confirm than the first week of June, La Blaugrana can operate much more freely.

Until then, the 21-year-old Dutch midfielder has time to ponder and discuss with PSG. The French club is not looking to permanently transfer him, but would be more accepting of a potential loan. For Xavi Simons, the priority remains Barcelona, and the Catalan club simply needs to make sure they can generate the right space in their squad to recruit him.
