One of the most notable players to depart from FC Barcelona last summer was the French winger Ousmane Dembele. After spending six months at the Catalan club, during which he shone in patches and also spent a significant time in the infirmary, the Frenchman decided to leave Barcelona for PSG.
However, as SPORT has noted, the Frenchman may be in for a return to his former club sooner than anyone would have expected. The scenario for such a possibility, while not confirmed, is gradually taking shape.
PSG’s performances in the UEFA Champions League have once again been underwhelming, and Luis Enrique’s side is looking more likely to finish second in their group after their draw with Newcastle United.
On the other hand, Barcelona’s win over Porto almost ensures that the Catalans will finish at the top of their group. Thus, there is every possibility that the two teams can come up against one another in the Champions League Round of 16.
In such an event, it would not only be Ousmane Dembele who would have a reunion with his old club, but the manager, Luis Enrique, would also be returning to the club where he spent the most notable period of his career.
Under the Spaniard, Barcelona won the treble in 2015 with the famed front three of Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, and Neymar. That was the last Champions League title that Barcelona won, and the ensuing years saw the club’s performances increasingly deteriorate.
This downward trend is being reversed only now, as the Catalan team was even unable to qualify for the knock-out rounds in the last two editions of the tournament. Hopefully, Xavi and Co. can keep building on this momentum to get Barcelona back at the top in Europe.
