While Barcelona are already mathematically guaranteed to finish at the second position in the La Liga table this season, their match against Sevilla tonight will still be a significant affair for most Blaugrana fans.
This is mainly the case because this will be the last game of Xavi Hernandez as the head coach of the Catalan team. However, there will also be some players who will be playing their last game in Barcelona colors, as there are significant changes expected in the team this summer.
While it is not yet clear which these players will be, one of the individuals who is sure to say his goodbyes after tonight’s game is the defender, Marcos Alonso, whose Barcelona contract will be expiring this summer.
However, as SPORT has reported, the Spaniard will not be able to bid farewell to his teammates and the fans on the pitch, as he has not been included in the match squad because of a lower back discomfort.
These lower back problems have kept the defender from playing for Barcelona for a major part of this season, and he also had to undergo a surgery in December to get rid of this problem. Thus, despite Alejandro Balde’s absence, Alonso had been unable to play much for Xavi, and Cancelo and Fort have been deputizing for the injured defender.
However, even before he started suffering from this problem, his season at Barcelona had been far from conspicuous. He has only eight appearances to his name this season, five in La Liga and another three in the UEFA Champions League.
Only Vitor Roque, who arrived only in January, has less minutes on the pitch than Alonso this season. In 2024, Alonso made only a single appearance, in the match against Cadiz.
Overall, since arriving in 2022, Alonso has made 40 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions, with 29 of them coming in La Liga, 8 in UCL, 2 in UEL, and another in the Spanish Super Cup.
He will leave the club this summer with a La Liga and a Spanish Super Cup trophy to his name, but without being able to make too much space in Barcelona fans’ hearts.
