Xavi does not defend Barcelona captain for his inconsistencies

The errors and woes of FC Barcelona this season go beyond just their financial problems. The Blaugranes are a team already riddled with economic limitations, but they have been let down by other things as well. Even on a sporting front, the Barcelona players have clearly lacked in this campaign.

Throughout the course of the ongoing campaign, many Barcelona performances have been forsaken due to individual errors. At times, despite statistically being one of the most creative sides in Europe, Barça have been poor at making the most of their chances.

However, on other occasions, Barcelona have seen their spine and backbone lose their shape and result in horrendous transitional errors. So much so, in fact, that the Catalan giants always seem vulnerable to conceding a lot irrespective of the number of goals they score.

These irregularities, brought to Xavi’s attention in his recent press conference, truly stick out. Yet, as highlighted by SPORT, the Barcelona coach did not back away from talking about them when the rather inconsistent performances from Frenkie De Jong were brought up:

“Not just Frenkie, he has had good games and others not so much, like the team. It’s a summary of the season, we have been inconsistent, lacked consistency, and he is not an exception.”

However, on the topic of a potential departure for him in the summer, the current Barcelona coach preferred to talk more about the ongoing campaign:

“Frenkie is a very important player and he is happy at the club, I don’t think it’s the time to talk about exits. We don’t discuss it from within, we are focused on Celta, the Champions League… we are not thinking about next season.”

With Xavi’s decision to leave more or less set in stone, there is still uncertainty surrounding La Blaugrana. For now, Barcelona want guarantees, but they quite possibly can not count on that many.

With De Jong’s future uncertain and Xavi not willing to continue, they have a lot of planning and sorting out to do ahead of the summer.
