Doubt and tension over the position of Xavi Hernandez at Barcelona continues to persist. The Catalan club demands exceptional performance from their side this season given all the risks and investments made. However, Barcelona have failed to live up to expectations thus far this season.
Important losses to the likes of Real Madrid and Girona have resulted in Barcelona now having to chase down their rivals for La Liga’s top spot. While Xavi continues to see his side as being “under development”, others are not so keen on that label.
Yet, there are still those that continue to have his back. As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, a familiar face admitted that he believes that Xavi should continue to have everyone’s support. In particular, especially from those who follow Barcelona. This face was none other than Rafa Marquez, head coach of Barcelona Atletic.
At a recent King’s League event, he was asked about the ongoing situation with the first team and the criticism being directed toward Xavi’s management.
“Xavi needs support; let’s hope for good results. Xavi is very capable and has full backing from the club and the board. Barça is in good hands.”
The Barcelona Atletic coach was also asked about his own future as a coach. Currently managing the subsidiary, there were reports suggesting Barça could look at him as a possible replacement of Xavi one day:
“One must work hard to reach that position. Time will ultimately decide. Today, the most important thing for me is to prepare well, gain more experience, and, when the opportunity arises, be as ready as possible. If it doesn’t happen, I’ll explore other paths.”
For now, the Barcelona first team heads towards Belgium. A Champions League clash against Royal Antwerp awaits them, with the match being a possible decider that establishes the Group H positioning on the last matchday.
