FC Barcelona lost to Girona last night, in a match that can have important implications for the league. Barcelona are aiming to defend their league title, and winning this match would have allowed them to get only two points behind the league leaders.
Owing to the importance of this match, Xavi and several Barcelona players spoke to the media, highlighting the reasons for the loss and identifying how the team can move forward in the coming weeks.
One such player was Ronald Araujo, who had been in the highlights even before the match, mainly because of Bayern Munich’s interest in him.
The defender started the match with a mask as he had fractured his jaw, but took it off after the first thirty minutes. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the defender explained after the match that: “The mask was bothering me a lot. I wasn’t comfortable, so I decided to take it off.”
Barcelona conceded four goals in the match, but Araujo was adamant that it was not only the defense that was to be blamed for these goals:
“It’s true that we talk a lot about defense, but it’s about the entire team; pressure is crucial. When they take the ball away from us, it hurts.”
Araujo also praised the Girona team, who are emerging as one of the candidates for the league title: “Girona is a great team. The league is very long, but they have enough quality to win it.”
Another player who spoke to the media after this match was the Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski, and his comments have also been reported by Mundo Deportivo. The Pole also analyzed the match, and confessed that Michel’s men were better than his teammates for some parts of the game:
“It was a very tough game for us. I believe in some aspects they were better than us. We tried to do something, but it was tough. We have to keep working and staying positive.”
Lewandowski understood that this match was not the best for Barcelona, but urged the team to continue working towards betterment in the coming days:
“We’re trying to give our best. Today wasn’t our day, and we knew how tough the match would be, not just today but every game for them. We need to analyze what happened and try to win the remaining matches.”
