Having reached the halfway point of the season, FC Barcelona have already started making plans for the next season. The Catalans are thinking about making several changes in the squad, but nothing has been finalised as yet.

As previously reported here, one of the changes planned by the club is in its backline is to bring back Chadi Riad from Real Betis, and let one of its current centre-backs leave to make room for the La Masia graduate.

Another plan of the club was not to renew two Barcelona players whose contracts are running out at the end of this season, i.e., Marcos Alonso and Sergi Roberto. However, according to SPORT, there is a slight change in this plan.

The Catalans are now willing to offer Sergi Roberto another contract for one more year, but with wages less than what he is currently getting. Xavi’s desire to continue working with the midfielder was instrumental in the club making this change in its plans.

Roberto started this season in far from ideal conditions but has emerged as an important player for Xavi in the last few weeks. Furthermore, his stature as the captain of the team is also important for the dressing room, and Xavi does not want to part with such a key component of his squad.

Furthermore, the club also understands that getting a player of Roberto’s quality at a cost lower than retaining him would be practically impossible. Thus, an agreement can be reached, as Roberto himself is willing to do his all to remain with the Catalan club for as long as possible.

On the other hand, Marcos Alonso’s case is quiet different. Last year, he was an important member of the squad, as he played on the flank as well as in the centre of the defence frequently. However, he has played only 299 minutes in total this season, and Inigo Martinez’s arrival has made him virtually disposable for Xavi.

Furthermore, his back problem is expected to keep him out of action for another few months, and his salary has also increased this season. The Spaniard will be made aware of club’s decision at the end of January, but for now, everything indicates that he will have to leave Barcelona at the end of the season.
