The incorporation of Matheus Fernandes has been one of the most bizarre transfer decisions made by FC Barcelona in their history. In addition to the significant losses that the club incurred by purchasing him and paying him his wages, his exit from the club also led the Catalan club to a court of law.
This case ended up in Barcelona having to pay the player a compensation of €7.7 million. However, there is some good news for the Catalan club and its supporters in this regard.
Court reduces the compensation for Fernandes
SPORT reports that a law court in Catalonia, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC), has decreased the amount of compensation that Blaugranes were liable to pay to the footballer from €7.7 million to €731,291.67, thus decreasing this amount to less than 10% of what it previously was.
However, Fernandes can still file an appeal against this sentence. Still, the club will be looking to recover €6,968,708.33 of the €7.7 million that they had already paid as compensation for the player.
Fernandes’ history with Barcelona
Fernandes signed for Barcelona from Palmeiras in January 2020 for €8.6 million. However, upon his arrival at Barcelona, he was immediately loaned to Real Valladolid for the rest of the season.
He stayed only for one season at Camp Nou and played only 17 minutes for the Catalan club in a Champions League match against FC Dynamo Kyiv. In June 2021, the player was sent a letter of disciplinary dismissal by Barcelona, whose contract with the Catalans was valid till June 2025.
Later, in January 2023, a court in Barcelona sentenced the club to pay €7.7 million to the player, as the court believed the player was unfairly dismissed from employment.
Now this amount has been reduced, and Laporta’s administration will certainly welcome this development, considering club’s weak financial conditions.
