Although he does not always get on the pitch and is not among the most prominent of names in the squad, Sergi Roberto is still a very important player for FC Barcelona. He is currently among the senior most players and also the first captain of Xavi’s team.

He is currently going through his 14th season at the Catalan club, having developed at the youth level and made his way to the first team as a young midfielder. But now being 32 years old, the La Masia graduate is facing a somewhat uncertain future at Barcelona.

There were a lot of questions about his continuity at the club, but the latest news in this regard provided by SPORT claims that he is set to remain at Barcelona for at least one more season. The player made it easy for the club to decide on his continuity by playing the role of an ideal locker room leader, and helping keep the team united in highly difficult moments.

He has also contributed significantly on the pitch whenever and wherever Xavi has called up on his services, and this was clearly observable in the last game against Valencia when he got on the pitch at half-time to play as a pivot but ended the match as a left-back.

Owing to this importance of the player, Deco, and his team had already decided to renew him for one more season some weeks ago. The captain himself was receptive to the offer, and the agreement can be announced before the end of this season, especially if the team is able to secure the second place in La Liga with some matches to spare.

Xavi always wanted to retain the player, and his decision to stay at the club also helped Sergi Roberto decide to stay for another season. However, Deco also wanted to retain Roberto irrespective of whether Xavi had stayed or departed.

In addition to Xavi’s continuity, another factor that made Roberto decide to stay at the club was his desire to be the team’s captain when the new Camp Nou opens.
