FC Barcelona will soon face off against Girona in one of the most hotly anticipated clashes of La Liga. Michel’s side have become one of the formidable opponents in the Spanish First Division. Xavi’s Barcelona, on the other hand, are almost back at their best.

Currently, both Catalan clubs are fighting for the La Liga title this season. Simultaneously, both sides are also focused on ensuring they play the best brand of attacking football they possibly can.

However, given the intensity of their clash, both sides will also need to be careful. As such, Mundo Deportivo has highlighted five separate things about Girona that Barcelona will need to remain mindful of if they hope to overcome Michel’s side at the Montjuic Stadium.

Subduing the wingers:

Much of Girona’s offensive play is generated from their talented wingers. Both the young Brazilian Savio and Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsyhankov are quite prominent figures within Michel’s setup and Barcelona will need to be extremely careful in how they hope to stop them given how quickly they can carve open spaces.

Targeting the target man:

Artem Dovbyk is yet another Ukrainian in the frontline of Girona that Barcelona will need to stop. The striker is capable of holding onto the ball using his physical strength and opening enough of a window for those around him to join the attack. Keeping an eye on him and his movement could be key for Barcelona.

Michel’s defensive decision:

Girona have lost one of their most reliable soldiers in Yangel Herrera. However, given that they play Barcelona, Michel’s team could switch things up a bit.

Either they could stick with their three midfielders or go for an additional central defender at the back to maintain defensive cover. Barcelona, as a result, will need to be mindful of how offensively they can approach this game as a result.

Being aware of Girona’s cavalry:

One of the most prominent tactical aspects of Girona’s style of play is their willingness to commit to attacks. Beyond just their forwards, their midfielders rush into opposition boxes in the blink of an eye. For Barcelona, this spells a lot of danger to worry about.

Needing their Pole against Girona:

One definite way in which Barcelona could turn the tide is if they utilize Robert Lewandowski properly. While his finishing has been wayward at times this season, so has the service given to him. To ensure goals against Girona’s open style of play, Barcelona will need to ensure Lewandowski’s involvement.
