It is becoming increasingly clear that in order to bring in more players in the upcoming summer transfer window, FC Barcelona will first have to generate funds by selling some of their current players.
In this regard, one of the individuals who has been linked with a move away from the Catalan club is the midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman has received an offer for a contract renewal with lower wages from Barcelona, but if he does not accept this renewal, the Blaugranes will be open to selling him to make reductions in their wage bill.
Other recent news on this subject indicated that the French club Paris Saint Germain are interested in signing Frenkie de Jong this summer, as Kylian Mbappe has decided to leave the Parisian club, and Luis Enrique’s side will be looking to reinforce itself after the winger’s departure.
If this operation proceeds further, PSG will be able to at last get their hands on a player that they had wanted years ago. As Mundo Deportivo has noted, PSG were one of the most serious contenders with Barcelona for De Jong’s signature in 2019, but the Catalans were ultimately able to beat the Parisians to his signing.
Now, five years later, stars are once again aligning for PSG to go into the market for the Dutchman. With Mbappe’s departure, the Parisians will easily have enough space in their wage bill to integrate De Jong in their squad, while keeping paying the wages that the player earns with Barcelona.
However, there are still a lot of uncertainties regarding this operation. Firstly, De Jong might decide not to leave Barcelona at all, with or without accepting the new contract, as his current contract also goes till 2026.
Furthermore, if he decides to leave, he has other offers on the table as well. Tottenham have already shown their interest in the player, while Manchester United and Chelsea are also reported to be interested in him.
