FC Barcelona suffered a significant blow in their pursuit of players that they want to build a long-term project on as the Swedish youngster, Lucas Bergvall, decided to sign for Tottenham Hotspurs instead of the Catalan club on the last day of the winter transfer window.

The youngster was linked very closely to Barcelona throughout January and had even visited the city of Barcelona. This visit particularly raised the hopes of Barcelona supporters that he would join the club, but he ultimately decided to sign for the Premier League side which had put a more lavish contract on the table.

Now, having signed with Spurs till 2029, the youngster appeared in an interview with a Swedish newspaper, in which he explained and reasoned his choice of Tottenham as the next step in his career.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the player admitted that it was very difficult to say no to Barcelona, but believed Tottenham was the right club for him at this point in time:

“I feel better in my stomach. Both are incredible clubs. It was a very difficult choice, it was 50-50 for a long time, but I felt the next step for me was Tottenham. It wasn’t easy to say no to Barcelona, it took me a long time to decide. It was a tough decision.”

Earlier, it was reported that among the various reasons that made Bergvall choose Tottenham instead of Barcelona, one of the most prominent was Tottenham’s offering of a first-team contract, while the Catalans were offering only a youth contract to him.

This aspect might have been a deciding factor, as otherwise, FC Barcelona is one of the best clubs in the world for talent development, and the club’s emphasis on youth is already clear from the high number of young players playing for the first team.

Now, after signing for Tottenham, Bergvall has joined the Djurgarden camp in Gran Canaria, Spain, to prepare for his side’s next Swedish league campaign, which kick-offs at the end of March. He will join Tottenham in June.
