Just four months into the season, and the number of players suffering a torn ACL is increasing. Key players to their respective sides such as Eder Militao, Thibaut Courtois, Yeremy Pino, and Neymar Jr are a few names on the list.
Another player whose name has been added to that list of players, is FC Barcelona and Spanish midfielder Gavi. It was in the UEFA Euros qualifier against Georgia where Gavi succumbed to a torn ACL and was limping off the field in the 26th minute of the match.
Recently, FC Barcelona even released a medical report which also revealed an injury to the Spaniard’s lateral meniscus. These injuries are expected to keep the youngster out for the rest of the season. Given his importance within this Barcelona side, his injury has caused significant frustration and complications.
However, La Liga returns this weekend after a hectic international break and Xavi spoke to the media before the Catalans face Rayo Vallecano away from home. Expectedly, Xavi addressed the media regarding Gavi’s injury. As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, Xavi said:
“I talked to him; I had the personal experience that made me a better footballer. I became aware that I had to take better care of myself, be more professional, and engage in more preventive measures. I conveyed to him that recovery is the key to healing the knee.”
Furthermore, he mentioned, “Recovery is always difficult, and it is extremely important not to skip a single day of the recovery process. That’s what I told him.”
Coincidentally, Xavi also had his fair share of injuries across his illustrious career. Like Gavi, Xavi tore his ACL during the 2005/06 season – when FC Barcelona won three titles – and he was out of action for 4 months.
Gavi remains an integral part of Xavi’s side and with him being out for the rest of the season, the Catalans lose a key player in the midfield. The Spaniard has made 15 appearances for La Blaugrana this season, scoring two goals against Villareal in La Liga and in the Champions League against Royal Antwerp.
