The hunt for the best young talents remains the goal for FC Barcelona moving forward. The Blaugranes understand the reality of their fragile financial position and must adhere to certain measures to compensate. For this exact reason, Barcelona are diving deeper and deeper into the market of youth talents.
By pursuing youngsters instead of established stars, Barcelona can manage to finance the operations. This allows them to bet on future talents and help them develop rather than spend record fees on established superstars. The acquisition of Vitor Roque was the first step in this direction, but the target list continues to grow.
As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the latest target for Barcelona is a Swedish talent named Momodou Sonko. An 18-year-old left winger, the Swede is an exceptional player who has exploded in the Swedish Allsvenskan this year in 2023.
With 7 goals and 4 assists in the 2023 edition of the Swedish league, the player has been quite the revelation for BK Hacken. Moreover, Barcelona see him as a great bet for the future and also an affordable one. Currently valued at €4 million by Transfermarkt, the player also has an active release clause of €9 million.
The player’s current contract with Hacken remains active until June of 2025. Even his current Swedish side is hoping to offload the player in exchange for what would be the club’s record fee received for any of their players. For Barcelona, on the other hand, this would be another step in this new direction that they have adopted.
Sonko would join the list of targets such as fellow Swede Lucas Bergvall and 17-year-old Argentine midfield prospect Claudio Echeverri. The two other wonder kids from Sweden and Argentina respectively have also gained the attention of several European clubs, but Barcelona remain intent on them.
For Sonko, Barça’s interest is contested by the likes of RB Leipzig and Liverpool. Even more impressively, the 18-year-old also managed to win the Young Player of the Year award in the Allsvenskan. The Swedish star undoubtedly has a huge future ahead of him, and Barcelona hope to be a part of it.
