As FC Barcelona approach closer to the conclusion of this season and the upcoming summer transfer window, they have one task quite high on their priority list, the signing of a midfield pivot.
Since Sergio Busquets’ departure from the Catalan club, this position has been a clear weakness in Xavi’s team, and there are two players in particular whom the Blaugranes wish to take this role, i.e., Joshua Kimmich and Martin Zubimendi.
The latter of these players is Xavi’s favorite for this role and has been desirous of his inclusion in his squad since the last summer. This year, Barcelona seem to be once again working on getting the Real Sociedad midfielder, as SPORT reports that a meeting between Deco and the player’s agent took place last Monday.
While this meeting went on with good harmony between the two parties, the discussions did not paint an entirely rosy picture for the Catalans. Barcelona let the player’s agent know that he is the highest target on their list, even ahead of Kimmich.
However, it was also confirmed for Barcelona in this meeting that the only way to acquire the midfielder would be by paying his €60 million release clause, as Zubimendi has a contract till 2027 with Real Sociedad, who also do not have any economic urgency to sell their players at this moment.
Thus, Zubimendi understands that joining Barcelona is not a very realistic option for him. Other options from the Premier League and Bundesliga are more likely for him to pan out, as both Arsenal and Bayern Munich are interested in him and have the financial muscle to pay his release clause.
But one thing that goes in Barcelona’s favor in this operation is Xavi’s insistence to get the player. The Spaniard knows that Xavi is obsessed with him and he will have an important role in the squad if he signs for the Catalans.
Right now, the midfielder is very happy at La Reale, but knows that he will not be able to play in the Champions League with his beloved club next season. This factor can also play a role in his decision about his future this summer.
