From among the different tasks that FC Barcelona have to complete within the upcoming summer transfer window, the one on which the club is focusing currently is the renewal of their star winger, Ousmane Dembele. This operation is being emphasised heavily by the club because his contractual situation makes the club prone to a possible heavy financial and sporting loss.
According to SPORT, Dembele wants to continue at FC Barcelona, and his current contract runs up to 2024. However, his release clause from 30th June onwards will be only €50 million, and he can easily force the club into a move if another club personally convinces him into a transfer.
FC Barcelona and Dembele’s agents have already met in this regard, and the first meeting between the two parties took around one month ago. The talks between these parties have largely been positive, and both have shown a willingness to come to an agreement, but still, no final agreement has been reached, which raises the fears of losing the star Frenchman only for €50 million.
Dembele feels comfortable in Barcelona, has a good relationship with Xavi, and feels himself to be an important part of the squad. Xavi himself sees Dembele to be an integral part of the squad and the most decisive player currently in the team. Thus, both parties want to remain associated with one another, and Barcelona will offer him a new contract in the coming days.
This new contract will showcase the trust that Xavi and the club have in the Frenchman. The new contract will see an improvement in both the number of years he will stay with the club and the wages he will get. He is expected to become the highest paid player in the squad with this new contract, and his release clause will also be raised to indicate his importance to the club.
Thus, although his current contract runs up to 2024, the club needs to undertake negotiations with Dembele’s entourage as soon as possible to raise his minimal release contract that will be activated this summer.
