Since Xavi announced his decision to step down from his duties at FC Barcelona at the end of this season, the head coach position at the Catalan club has become highly uncertain.
As things stand, Xavi has not given any indications of going back on his word, and the current Barcelona Atletic coach, Rafa Marquez, is the favorite to replace him on the Barcelona bench, especially as it is impossible to get one of the favorite candidates of the club – i.e., Klopp, Guardiola, or Luis Enrique.
Another name that has been strongly linked with the Catalan club for the last few months is the former Bayern Munich and German national team coach, Hansi Flick. He won the treble with Bayern Munich in his first season in charge, and thus has his stock quite high.
However, his lack of experience goes against him. Currently, the German is without a job, and as Mundo Deportivo has reported, one of his countrymen and former German player, Lothar Matthaus, has given some hints on his possible future destination. Talking to a program at Sky Germany, the former German international said:
“It’s possible that nobody at Bayern trusts Flick to return as coach. I would trust him because I know he is an excellent coach and an excellent person, but he doesn’t want to coach in the Bundesliga again. As far as I know, Hansi Flick will no longer work in the Bundesliga. He is more focused on finding a club abroad.”
From these comments, it looks likely that the German is still interested in a job at Barcelona. He also recently appointed Pini Zahavi, as his representative, and the agent’s good relationship with Joan Laporta can help the German land his desired job for the upcoming season.
