It has not been long since their last encounter, but FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to clash yet again. This time, for both Clasico rivals, a title is at stake in Saudi Arabia. Set to take on Los Blancos for the Spanish Super Cup, Xavi’s Barcelona will undoubtedly be raring to go.
Heading into the match, Xavi already has a decent idea of the players he will be able to count on. Raphinha, for instance, will unfortunately not be available for selection following his injury against CA Osasuna. However, other medically cleared stars of the team, as per the official squad list, will all be ready.
Here is how Barcelona could line up against Real Madrid.
Expected Line-up:
Goalkeeper: Inaki Pena
Having managed to keep a clean sheet against CA Osasuna, and needing some strong saves to ensure it, Inaki Pena is in fine form. His performance against Real Madrid will be crucial in helping Barcelona overcome their arch-rivals.
Left-back: Alejandro Balde
Despite his back problems against Osasuna, Balde is expected to start again for Barcelona. The electric fullback has good memories against Real Madrid, and the rest of the team will be hoping he can relive them yet again.
Centre-back: Andreas Christensen
The Danish defender is a great example of a consistent player. Despite losing his position at times to other teammates this season, Christensen has continued to work his way back into the team and is now a consistent performer for Xavi’s side.
Centre-back: Jules Kounde
Had it been any other team, Jules Kounde would probably have had to play as right-back. However, given that it is Real Madrid, Xavi will likely use his most trusted solution against Vinicius Jr. Kounde, on the other hand, will be tasked with stopping the attacks from the central regions.
Right-back: Ronald Araujo
Arguably the most important duel in any El Clasico these days, Ronald Araujo will take on Vinicius Jr. The Uruguayan defender will be tasked with keeping the Brazilian at bay on that dangerous left flank of his, and he has the ability as well as the experience to ensure that he does.
CDM: Frenkie De Jong
Almost impossible to press, or even forced to make a mistake, Frenkie De Jong is one of Xavi’s most trusted soldiers. The Dutchman has been both a loyal and quality servant to Barcelona for many years now. His presence and quality against Los Blancos could be key for the Catalan giants.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan
Making the right vertical connection when needed, Ilkay Gundogan possesses great passing awareness. His work rate, understanding of the game, and technical ability all combine to make him as good a player as he is. Barcelona will be hoping that he steps up yet again against Los Blancos.
CM: Pedri
After having missed the last El Clasico, this is Pedri’s chance to shine against Real Madrid. He was a scorer in last year’s Spanish Super Cup final, and that experience can go a long way. Barcelona have their Golden Boy back, and it is much more than just a welcome return.
Left-winger: Joao Felix
On his day, there are few wingers that compare to Joao Felix. Unfortunately, those days do not come by that frequently. However, with the quality that he possesses, he can deliver when Barcelona need him most.
Centre-forward: Robert Lewandowski
The Polish ace has finally started firing again for Barcelona. With two goals in two games, he seems to have found his rhythm again. Moreover, this could not have happened at a better time, and Barcelona need their star striker to return to his scoring ways.
Right-winger: Ferran Torres
Recent reports have claimed that rather than Lamine Yamal, it will be Ferran Torres replacing the injured Raphinha. The older Spaniard himself has been in quite some form this season, and if he continues in the same manner, he could be a great asset to this Barcelona side against Real Madrid.
