FC Barcelona have long been regarded as one of the most attractive clubs in world football, encompassing a rich history, a captivating playing style, and a passionate fan base. The allure of donning the iconic Blaugrana jersey and stepping onto the Camp Nou pitch is a dream for many players.
However, while for players it remains an attractive club to become a part of, for other clubs Barcelona automatically becomes a symbol of envy and at times motivation.
The Catalan club possesses the services of some of the very best players from around the world. National team players and even captains don the Blaugrana colors proudly, players that other elite sides would go to extreme lengths for to have them to themselves.
A recent case was that of Dutchman Frenkie De Jong, who had attracted the interest of Manchester City, similar to how he attracted the likes of Manchester United last season, with the English champions willing to pay upwards of €104 million to Barcelona for their midfield maestro.
Yet, there remains a calmness among the Catalans who, just as they did last time around when United came calling, will be looking to reject yet another offer for De Jong. Moreover, the player’s national team coach with the Netherlands and also former Barcelona manager, Ronald Koeman, gave his insight on the situation as well.
Ronald Koeman, as highlighted by Spanish outlet SPORT, referred to the current De Jong situation being something that will not deter the player amidst the incoming English interest, stating that:
“…Many clubs would like to sign a player like Frenkie. As far as I know, he is very happy here and has no intention of leaving. Barcelona has two tasks: strengthening the team and trying to keep their great players at the club for many years…”
A club legend, Koeman had an unforgettable time at Barcelona as a player and while his managerial reign at the club may not have been as impressive, he surely remains one of the Catalan club’s most iconic figures.
Frenkie De Jong on the other hand remains one of Barcelona’s most prized possessions in the modern era of the club. The 26-year-old holds huge importance in this current Blaugrana side being led by another club legend, Xavi Hernandez, who continues to consider the Dutch midfielder as an untouchable asset for both his own tactics and the club as a whole.
