While there are also some problems with the team’s structure and the form of some important players, there is no doubt that FC Barcelona have suffered a lot on the pitch because of the high number of injuries suffered by some of Xavi’s key players.
As things stand, both Marc Andre Ter Stegen and Gavi are still unavailable for Xavi for a significant period of time, while Pedri’s injury is also going to keep him in the infirmary for some weeks. In addition to these key players, there are some fringe players also unavailable for selection right now.
One of these fringe players who is currently out with an injury is Marcos Alonso. The Spaniard has not been fit to play for the last five matches because of his back problems. In recent days, there has been speculation in the media that he might have to undergo surgery to completely recover from this issue.
Now, Mundo Deportivo reports that the club’s medical facilities and the footballer’s entourage are assessing his situation, and they will make a final decision this Friday on whether the player will go through the surgery table or will continue recovering through conservative methods.
Alonso played his last game for Barcelona in the Champions League tie against Shakhtar Donetsk. After that match, the club released a medical report which reported that the defender was suffering from a lower back problem. However, no time frame for his recovery was mentioned.
This injury, and a possible surgery, will even worsen an already forgettable season for Alonso. He has only appeared in seven games for Barcelona this season, playing a total of 299 minutes.
Now, if he undergoes surgery -the option with the backing of most doctors- he will need another significant period of time to add to this number of appearances.
