FC Barcelona have many contracts with players that require consistent assessment of the terms. Football has become a complex business at this point in time, and clubs often add unique clauses to the contracts of their players. The same can be said about the contracts offered by Barcelona as well.

One such clause exists within the contract of Spanish defender Marcos Alonso. Acquired last year, the former Chelsea player arrived as a free transfer and had a certain prominence in his first season. However, things have changed quite a bit since.

In terms of the special clause in his contract, as highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the Spaniard can only have the duration of his current deal extended by one additional year if he plays at least half of the official matches for FC Barcelona.

As things stand, meeting that requirement seems to be quite the difficult ask. Given the lack of minutes and appearances he has had this season, it becomes increasingly unlikely that he will be able to meet those required numbers. Moreover, there are other factors worth considering too.

MD reports that while interest from Saudi Arabia does exist, the player is not focused on leaving in January. Instead, he remains assured that his exit will take place in the summer of 2024.

That is the date by when his current contract is set to expire and also the date by when he believes his time at Barcelona will be over. As such, his continuity beyond this season does seem difficult.

With Inigo Martinez currently injured, there was a chance for Marcos Alonso to feature more. However, given his own physical uncertainties, the former Chelsea defender is unlikely to enter the squad against Girona. In his stead, young Pau Cubarsi is expected to accept Xavi’s call to action.
