Two factors make Villarreal star’s acquisition impossible for Barcelona

Their financial problems have kept FC Barcelona from getting their desired players from the market for several years now, but the Catalans still continue to keep an eye on players whom they believe can strengthen their squad going forward.

On the offensive front, one of the players that has aroused a lot of interest in the Barcelona decision-making circles is the Villarreal attacking midfielder and winger, Alex Baena.

The Catalans have been keeping an eye on the Spaniard for several years now, however, their economic needs and priorities to strengthen other areas of the squad kept them from making a serious effort for the Villarreal player.

Things are going to remain the same, as SPORT has outlined two reasons that make it almost impossible for Baena and Barcelona to unite in the future.

The funds needed to finance a move for Baena’s arrival still remain an area of problem. The forward has a contract till 2028 with Villarreal, with a €60 million release clause. While the Catalans believe he can be obtained for a sum smaller than this amount, they would still have to shell out upwards of €40 million, and Barcelona are in no position to pursue the Spaniard.

Secondly, Barcelona already have the position of the left-wing well covered with Joao Felix in the squad. If he is signed permanently this summer, Baena’s options of joining Barcelona will end completely, even though these two players do not have the exact same profile in attack.

The Blaugranes like Baena mainly for his quality, ball control, and understanding of the game. His ability to play both as an attacking midfielder and a winger is also valued highly by Barcelona. While playing centrally, he has the ability to find passes between the defensive lines, and can also perform very well on the wing.
