Deco, the Sporting Director at FC Barcelona, is one of the most active officials of the Catalan club and makes frequent media appearances to talk about different aspects of the team.

His last media appearance came with the Spanish news outlet SPORT, with whom he discussed the different matters currently underway at the club. The most prominent part of this interview was Deco’s comments on Xavi as the coach for Barcelona.

Deco was specifically asked whether Xavi is still the best-suited coach for Barcelona in the current circumstances, and in response to this question, Deco put his full faith and support behind his former teammate:

“Without a doubt. He is the best coach for this project. He is the coach who agreed to come at an important moment to build what we are building. He has gone through many difficulties and continues to learn.”

“Surely, he, more than anyone, wants to play better. He has been a midfielder, like me, and we always want to play well. Xavi knows the responsibility he has and knows that when we are not well, it is tough. Both for him and for everyone. He knows perfectly well what he has to do.”

The Sporting Director went on to disclose that he fully trusts the abilities of Xavi to get the team out of this difficult situation, but he does not often advise Xavi on footballing matters as it is not his domain:

“I am not an advisor, and I am not a coach either. I talk a lot about football with Xavi, but always respect his figure as he respects mine. I don’t give him advice. He is the coach and knows perfectly well what he has to do.”

“At some point, I allow myself to express my opinion because I see things, but most of the time we see the same things because we understand football. I learned a lot from him because he has the coach’s vision. He has his coaching staff, and we have full confidence in them. We can discuss, talk, reflect, but he is the coach.”

These comments from Deco will definitely be received well by Xavi, who has been under pressure for the last few weeks as the team has been unable to perform up to its usual standards.

The current international break would provide Xavi with an opportunity to come up with solutions to the problems he is facing, and hopefully, the team can bounce back in the coming weeks.
