The last night was a very eventful one for FC Barcelona. The Catalans lost to Villarreal in La Liga which keeps Xavi’s team ten points behind the league leaders Real Madrid, and only a miracle can now cause the Blaugranes to defend their league title.

However, it was the events after the match that left associated with the Catalan club in shock. The Barcelona head coach, Xavi Hernandez, told the media after the match that he would be stepping away from the coaching duties at his beloved club.

Xavi claimed that he had already made this decision prior to this match, but made it public only after the painful defeat to Villarreal, in which Barcelona overcame two goals to go ahead, but two very late goals from the Yellow Submarines turned the match in their favor.

Meanwhile, SPORT reports that even the players themselves did not know that Xavi had decided to leave the club after the end of the season, and thus there were no quick reactions from them on the announcement.

However, Gavi, had been among the first players to react to this news as he wrote on his social media: “Always to the death with you, mister“, accompanied with a picture of Xavi talking to him.

More reactions will come from other players but from Gavi’s response to Xavi’s announcement, it is clear that the young midfielder had a good relationship with the Barcelona legend, and he will miss him when he returns to action next season.

Gavi is currently recovering from an ACL tear that he suffered in the early phases of this season, and was one of the players whose absence clearly impacted the results of the team. The team has generally been very unlucky with injuries this season, and it seems like Xavi will have to pay the price for this lack of fitness.
