Eric Garcia is one of the FC Barcelona players who will be playing this season away from the Catalan team. The defender has joined Girona on loan for this season, as he looks to regain his form.
Eric Garcia rejoined Barcelona from Manchester City in 2021 with many expectations from the fans of the Catalan club. However, the defender has not been able to establish himself as one of the starters at Barcelona. This season, he went even lower in the pecking order with the arrival of Inigo Martinez, and decided to try his luck at Girona for a season.
Garcia joined Girona because of Michel
It was reported that Xavi wanted Garcia to remain at Barcelona, and even tried to convince him to stay, but the player himself pushed for a move away from the club. As SPORT has reported, one of the reasons why Garcia wanted to join Girona was because of their head coach Michel, and the way in which he had set up his team.
Garcia believed that Michel’s style of play at Girona was perfectly in line with how he had developed throughout his career, and himself acknowledges that talking to Michel was a key factor that led to him joining Girona.
Counting on his family to adapt
Still, leaving Barcelona was not an easy decision for Garcia. However, the player is counting on the presence of his family with him as a factor that can make it easier for him to get incorporated into his new surroundings:
“I have family around here in Girona, in Olot… I’m almost like at home. It’s a club that is growing a lot, people are very excited…”
The defender also talked about his new team’s chances this season:
“It’s a very long season; we have to maintain the mentality of winning every game. We’ve had matches against tough opponents, but from a humble perspective, we should aim for the top.”
Garcia will return to Barcelona once his loan at Girona ends. Before then, he hopes to regain his best form, so he can get a fixed position in the Blaugrana club, and contribute significantly to its successes in the coming seasons.
