Trailing ten points to the league leaders Real Madrid, it is becoming increasingly unlikely for FC Barcelona to defend their La Liga title this season. However, the Catalans still have a lot to play for in the coming months, as they will look to ensure their qualification to the Champions League for the next season.
But for this purpose, the Blaugranes will have to ensure they do not drop any more points, as Atletico Madrid are only 3 points below them on the table, and Athletic Club are also following closely.
As SPORT has reported, one of the leaders of the current Barcelona locker room and one of the most celebrated strikers in Europe, Robert Lewandowski also recognized this aspect, and asked the team for a change, as he talked to the media while attending a social event:
“We are at the ideal moment to change, to play better. First in Vigo and then the Champions League arrives. We are working for it.”
“It’s difficult to explain what’s happening because we conceded three goals against Granada, for example. We’ve had a long week to work and, as I said, we are in the perfect moment to change.”
Lewandowski was still hopeful that his team could still end this season with some silverware: “Calmness and confidence. I am sure that we are going to win many matches and at the end of the season, we are going to win something.”
Lewandowski identified the departures of some of the most experienced Barcelona players as one of the causes for the team’s poor performances this season: “Last year there were Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Piqué. This year there is a mix of experience and youth and that is noticeable.”
However, the Pole was not in a mood to put a lot of blame on refereeing errors: “I focus on scoring goals, when I talk to them it is to understand their decisions. When the on-field referee signals one thing and the VAR referee another.”
The Polish striker refrained from speculating about Xavi’s successor, but still praised his former coach Hansi Flick: “The coach of Barça is Xavi. Flick? He is a good person,”
While Lewandowski is hopeful, it is very unlikely that Barcelona will win either La Liga or Champions League this season, and these are the only two trophies that the Catalans are competing for now.
However, Xavi’s men will still have to put up a fight, and try their luck, especially in the Champions League.
