Despite having played the first two matches of the 2023-24 La Liga season, FC Barcelona have not yet been able to register all of their players. It was previously reported that Barcelona would receive the first installment of their latest lever only in the last days of August, with which the club would register these players.
There are three players in particular who can play a role in Xavi’s squad this season but have not yet been registered, i.e., Marcos Alonso, Inaki Pena, and Inigo Martinez. Clement Lenglet is also not registered, but he is not in the plans of Xavi for this season.
Alonso can leave Barcelona this summer
Previously, it was reported here how different factors are aligning that can result in Alonso leaving the club. The Catalans have signed Inigo Martinez who can provide the needed cover to Barcelona backline, while the potential arrival of Joao Cancelo will also provide Xavi with a quality player who can replace Alejandro Balde.
Furthermore, Marcos Alonso also has high wages at Barcelona, which can tempt the Catalan club to contemplate his sale to obtain some margin in their wage bill.
Now, Mundo Deportivo claims that the Spaniard also has a demand in the market, especially in the Premier League. The player spent a significant part of his career with Chelsea, before moving to Barcelona, and his performances are not forgotten by the English club. Thus, Aston Villa is one of the clubs currently interested in the defender.
The club from Birmingham was first prioritizing the Argentine Marcos Acuna as their primary reinforcement for the left flank. However, their negotiations with Sevilla have been difficult, and the Villans have thus become attentive to Marcos Alonso, particularly because of his Premier League experience.
Xavi also values the Spaniard
Meanwhile, Xavi also values Marcos Alonso, and his willingness to play at the center-back position last season despite the fact that this is not one of his best areas on the pitch. This season, Xavi was counting on him to be Alejandro Balde’s deputy, but such a role can become redundant with the arrival of Cancelo, as the Portuguese can play comfortably on both flanks.
Alonso has already reached an agreement for a contract that goes till 2024 with Barcelona. However, this contract has not yet been registered with La Liga, and this lack of registration has kept him from participating in the first two games of the league this season.
