Barcelona remain well informed about the ongoing dealings within the transfer market. Given their position as a European giant, but also due to their financial predicament, Barça try to remain informed. Yet, despite some targets being ideal for Barcelona, their acquisition proves to be quite difficult.
One of the major issues for Barcelona in recent seasons has remained their limited spending allowance. Due to this particular hurdle, the Catalan giants have been unable to pursue many of their favorite transfer targets. One such target was Joshua Kimmich.
As per SPORT, Barcelona are now falling behind in the race to sign Kimmich. The German midfielder, currently contracted to Bayern Munich, is one of the great ideal targets for Xavi’s Barcelona. His profile is seen as perfect for a team that lacks a specialist pivot, and are in desperate need of elite quality that the likes of Kimmich possess.
However, despite contract renewal talks with Bayern not proving to be fruitful, Barça are still unable to take advantage. The primary reason behind this is the fact that even if Bayern Munich open up to the possibility of selling Kimmich, they would likely ask for a sum that Barcelona can not match in their current position.
A team that can, however, match that asking price is Manchester City. Pep Guardiola, former manager at both Barcelona and Bayern, knows Joshua Kimmich on a personal level. The Spanish coach seems quite interested in reuniting with his German protege, and given City’s seemingly unlimited wealth, it could become a real prospect for him.
For Barcelona, on the other hand, this comes as a big blow. City are smart enough to wait and offer a lowered fee, knowing that Bayern would only have a year before Kimmich ends up leaving on a free either way. With his contract expiring in 2025, Bayern realistically only have half a year left to persuade him to extend.
However, Barça have also kept other options open. Players like Aleix Garcia could be brought sooner rather than later, and names like Amadou Onana continue to be linked to the Catalan giants. Ultimately, however, the acquisitions that arrive depend on the club’s finances.
