Barcelona are in urgent need of both funds and recruits in the winter market. Given their rather vulnerable financial position, recruiting additional players has become a rather arduous task. However, all hope may not be lost for Barcelona in January.
While there are players Barcelona may be willing to part ways with, they do not offer a lot of financial benefits. They do possess stars that other teams want, such as Ronald Araujo, but Barcelona are not looking to part ways with such players.
A player that they may consider letting go of, however, is former star Nico Gonzalez. According to the latest report by Nil Sola, Girona are the side most interested in purchasing the Spanish midfielder. Currently a player for FC Porto, Barça sold him in the summer for €8.5 million.
However, they did retain some additional benefits. Barcelona will receive 40% of any future sale of the player, and this could be key for them heading into January. Under ideal circumstances, Porto will want to make a profit over the €8.5 million that they invested, and the more they are able to get for Nico, the better it gets for Barcelona.
Moreover, the Catalan giants also have a buy-back clause available until 2025 for the player as well. It would cost them €30 million to active it, however, and they currently do not seem to be inclined to pay that amount. However, Barcelona would be more than happy to benefit even further from his transfer.
Girona, on the other hand, have been admirers of Nico since quite some time. They even reportedly wanted to incorporate the player last summer. For now, they believe that the former Barcelona midfielder could help strengthen their pivot position.
Simultaneously, Barcelona have their eyes on Girona’s captain, Aleix Garcia. The funds they could potentially receive from Nico’s transfer could just help out a lot. Consequently, they could enable Barça to launch an offensive strategy for their own target as well.
