One of the main priorities for FC Barcelona in the upcoming summer transfer window will be the acquisition of a midfield pivot to strengthen a core weakness of the team.
Oriol Romeu has not been able to play at the required standard for the Catalan club, and while Andreas Christensen has performed well in this position in the last few months, the Blaugranes are looking for a natural and competent option for this position.
However, to get a midfield pivot of their choice, the first step that Barcelona will have to take will be to return to the 1-1 rule in regards to FFP. Unless the Catalan club gets this achievement validated from La Liga, its options in the market will remain highly uncertain.
In this context, Mundo Deportivo reports that an interesting option has emerged as the Italian midfielder, Marco Veratti, has been offered to Barcelona. Currently playing for the Qatari club, Al-Arabi, he was already one of the candidates for Barcelona for this position in the past.
His association with the Blaugranes goes all the way back to 2017 when he had almost joined Barcelona. However, the move fell through, with drastic consequences for the Catalans, as PSG retaliated by snatching Neymar.
As of now, he is still an interesting option for Deco’s staff, but not a priority, especially because he is currently playing in the Qatari League, and there are some doubts about his competitive level. However, he is still 31 years old, and might have some years left to play at the highest level.
But Verratti will also have to make some sacrifices if he is to join his dream club. As was the case at PSG, Verratti is also getting very high wages in Qatar, and will have to lower down his salary significantly if he wants to play for FC Barcelona.
