For FC Barcelona, there are a handful of varying reasons that at times have restricted their pursuit of players that they may at one point during the transfer window have liked to acquire. These reasons tend to vary mainly between sporting disagreements or economic hurdles.

In light of such restrictions and barriers, at different points of the transfer window Barcelona have looked at alternative options to bring in as their new central defensive midfielder. A position left vacant by the departure of Sergio Busquets, the void left behind now needs immediate attention to fill.

Names such as Martin Zubimendi, Joshua Kimmich, and Sofyan Amrabat have all previously featured as players that Barcelona were attempting to bring in. However, none of those operations would end up in fruition, and even the latest pursuit of Marcelo Brozovic of Inter Milan has now been stalled due to rivaling interest from Saudi Arabia.

Another alternative that made short-term sporting sense as well as being economically feasible was that of Villarreal midfielder Dani Parejo. An option that Xavi Hernandez in particular liked, it is however heavily disputed by the others at the club, as per SPORT.

Believing his age of 34 to be far too advanced an age for Barcelona to be pursuing, other Sporting heads at the club are not in agreement with Xavi over bringing in the midfielder, despite the coach’s belief that he would be a stylistic fit for the club and his system.

Having played around 50 games this season across all competitions, a period during which he went on to score thrice and assist six times, Parejo definitely still has it in him to perform at the highest level, at least in the immediate future.

With a singular year left on his contract, his signing would be much more economically feasible than that of Brozovic, who Barcelona are reportedly still pursuing. It remains to be seen whether the sports management at the club ends up agreeing with Xavi’s point of view in regards to Parejo, but at the moment there is a definite gap in the opinions of both decision-making entities.
